Aussie homes are unique and, in our opinion, the best in the world! There’s some things that are quintessentially Australian...
1. The Backyard
After years and years of the Aussie backyard shrinking in size, falling out of favour with homeowners and being covered over with pavers or even artificial grass (shudder), the natural lawn backyard is back. And it’s a great investment - a place to entertain, relax, for the kids to play and homes with well-maintained lawns sell faster and for more, so what’s not to love? Natural lawns in our backyards act to reduce our carbon footprint, absorb dust and noise, act as a natural fire break and air conditioner, and are good for our mental health too. Who knew the Aussie backyard did so much more than just be the local for annual backyard cricket matches? Just be wary of the dreaded bindii.
2. The Queenslander
Set high for better airflow and to be away from flood waters and snakes, with their wrap around verandahs, there’s nothing quite like a Queenslander. Again, after being shunned for a while, the Queenslander is now a highly sought after property being renovated and brought back to their former glory throughout the suburbs.
3. Swimming pools
Yes, they take a bit of time and money to maintain. Yes, they have you wondering if you are actually popular or if visitors are just dropping by to visit the pool. But, Australia’s love affair with the backyard swimming pool continues. Traditional, lap pool, plunge pool - doesn’t matter when the mercury climbs!
4. The Inner-city Terrace
From the Queenslander in the north to the inner-city terrace of the south. Compact, historic and now trendy, the terraces offer convenient city living and that opportunity to own, rejuvenate and even add to, an piece of Australian history and culture. While they present some rebuild and renovation challenges the results can be stunning.
5. Outdoor Living
One of the most favourite aspects of living in Australia and those spaces we can home is the outdoor living space. We cook outside, dine outside, play, read and even nap so it was only natural that outdoor living areas and rooms became part of our homes. Always towards the top of homebuyers want lists, outdoor living spaces definitely deserve their spot on our top 10 list for all that they add to our lifestyle and ability to entertain at home.
6. The Granny Flat
For a bit of extra income, guest accommodation, an office/studio, a space to stash your adult child that just can’t (or won’t) leave the nest, the granny flat has become a quintessential part of Australian culture. It does make us ponder how many actually contain a granny. Gone are days of converting an old shed or garage too - granny flats have gone all modern. Think custom designed, think sustainable and eco-friendly, think converted shipping containers.
7. Waterfront Properties
With the bulk of our cities built on the coastlines you don’t have to be a multi-millionaire to own a property with amazing water views when you live in Australia - land girt by sea!
8. Open Plan Living
Australians have embraced the open plan design concept and made it their very own. Homes are now designed, built and renovated with communal spaces where families connect. Having the kitchen, living, dining, study and even outdoor room seemingly one large space allows families to be together but not on top of each other and able to do their own thing.
9. Weatherboards
Iconically Australian, weatherboards are the favourite cladding product that’s not only cost effective but instantly creates the Aussie beach house look and feel.
10. The Great Aussie BBQ
Evolving but always a favourite in Australian homes, the great Aussie BBQ. From the brick monstrosities of the 60s and 70s to the stainless steel jobs of the 90s and 00s, we have now seen a rise in the popularity of the super-sized BBQ. No longer relegated to the rear of the backyard, we now have entire outdoor kitchens that incorporate (and are often designed around) the biggest BBQs we’ve ever seen. Aussies are truly dedicated to our national pastime of barbecuing when we designate an entire room to it.
However you choose to celebrate Australia Day; a dip in the pool, a backyard BBQ, a quick trip down to the waterfront, enjoy all that makes this country great, quirky and unique.
Happy Australia Day from Zac and the team at Mint Equity!
